VBIS is offering a free educational presentation in recognition of International Overdose Awareness Day on August 31 from 1-2pm at our Downtown location.
This presentation, Beyond the Overdose: Understanding Brain Injury, Mental Health and Addiction in the Context of Opioid Overdose Survival will raise awareness of the brain injuries that can occur following an overdose and how these injuries may intersect with, contribute to, or complicate ongoing mental health and substance use challenges.
The presentation will also share key findings from the British Columbia Consensus on Brain Injury, Mental Health and Addictions, a three-year, community-engaged research project that brought together the perspectives and ideas of community stakeholders (e.g., service providers, people with lived experience, healthcare providers, policymakers, researchers, etc.) to identify the priorities and solutions needed to better support people experiencing the intersections of brain injury, mental health and addictions across British Columbia.
Together, these findings highlight the importance of understanding the longer-term impacts of the toxic drug crisis and non-fatal opioid overdose to consider how systems, services and communities can better support recovery and wellbeing among survivors.
