Access to health and wellness resources can be difficult for people with brain injuries, let alone those who also may be unhoused, living on low incomes, in recovery, or experiencing mental health challenges. Cost, accessibility, and other barriers can make it difficult to explore options that support an individual’s overall well-being.

At VBIS, we see the importance of individualized support every day. Brain injury can affect memory, attention, decision-making, emotional regulation, and the ability to navigate complex systems. These challenges can overlap with homelessness, mental health, substance use, and other barriers, creating situations where people can easily fall through the cracks.

One local resource available in the community is the REES Herbal Medicine Clinic, which provides free herbal consultations and individualized herbal formulas at no cost. We were pleased to connect with them at the recent Project Reconnect Fair held on September 22nd!

What Does the REES Herbal Medicine Clinic Offer?

The clinic provides compassionate, individualized consultations led by dedicated student practitioners. Rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach, consultations focus on the individual’s needs and can include discussions around herbal remedies and self-care practices.

Depending on the person’s needs, an individualized herbal formula may be prepared. The clinic’s goal is to make herbal medicine more accessible to people who may not otherwise be able to afford this type of service. By removing the cost of both the consultation and individualized herbal formula, the clinic creates another pathway for people to explore supportive self-care practices.

A Community Approach to Well-Being

At VBIS, we understand that meaningful support is about meeting people where they are and helping connect them with resources that fit their individual needs. Community partnerships and accessible services can play an important role in creating those connections and connecting people with those accessible community resources is one way we can help create a more supportive network of care.

For many people, accessing health and wellness services involves more than simply finding an available appointment. Cost, transportation, housing instability, mental health challenges, and other circumstances can all affect whether someone is able to access and maintain care. Community-based programs can help reduce some of these barriers.
